Choosing Your Hookah
The first step to a great hookah session is choosing the right hookah. At Rated R Smoke Shop Fullerton, we carry Egyptian and Syrian hookahs in various heights and styles. For beginners, we recommend a mid-size Egyptian hookah (around 24 inches) — easy to manage and produces great smoke. For experienced smokers, we carry taller Syrian-style hookahs for bigger clouds.
Selecting Your Shisha Tobacco
Shisha tobacco comes in hundreds of flavors and several different styles. Al Fakher is our most popular brand — affordable, consistent, and available in 100+ flavors. Starbuzz Exotic is a premium option with bolder flavors and thicker clouds. Fumari is known for its exceptional flavor clarity. We carry all three at our Fullerton location, plus Nakhla and other brands.
Packing the Bowl
How you pack your bowl makes a huge difference in your session. For a standard Egyptian clay bowl, use a fluff pack — loosely fill the bowl to just below the rim, then cover with foil and poke small holes. For a phunnel bowl, pack the shisha around the center spire. Avoid overpacking, which restricts airflow and causes harsh smoke.
Managing Heat
Heat management is the most important skill in hookah smoking. Use natural coconut coals (we carry them at our Fullerton store) rather than quick-light coals for a cleaner, better-tasting session. Start with 2-3 coals on the edges of the bowl and rotate every 5-10 minutes. If the smoke gets harsh, remove a coal or lift them slightly.
